Junior Education Minister Síle de Valera is refusing to bow to pressure to stand down from her post.
Taoiseach Bertie Ahern had suggested she may leave office early after deciding not to contest her Clare constituency at the next general election.
“I Know my cousin Síla de Valera has been a fine representative here in Clare,” he said.
In an interview with Clare FM, Mr Ahern said it was traditional within the party that resigning TDs who hold ministerial office stand aside to give someone else a chance ahead of the election.
